Advice to High School Graduates

Dear High School Graduate,

Congratulations! Graduating High School is a big deal, you may feel like you haven't accomplished a lot and it may even feel silly to be proud of yourself but it's not. High School is filled with so many ups and downs, it is a time of growing from a teenager to a young adult. Think back to your first day of High School, you were probably so nervous and timid. The pressure of getting good grades, being involved in after school activities and maintaining relationships with family and friends is so overwhelming.
On top of that you also are expected to know what you want to do for the rest of your life, that is a huge decision for a young adult to make. It seems like everyone around you has everything all planned out and you feel anxious because you have no idea what you want to go to school for let alone the plan for the rest of your life. No one ever knows exactly what they want, we may have an idea of what we want to do but as we get older we go in different paths. If you're reading this and you feel bad because you still haven't picked a degree and you have no idea what you are going to do, it's okay. If you are staying home and going to community college, it's okay! Don't feel bad because your friends seem to have it all figured out, all you need to worry about is YOUR life. If you are happy staying home, then stay home. If you are happy going away to school but all your friends are staying home, go away to school. One of the most important things to realize is that you have to do what is best for YOU. Don't pay attention to what everyone else is doing, that will only make you anxious about your life.
I sit here, writing this letter at 23 years old. I went to community college and got my Associates in Business. I always knew I wanted to open a bakery, once I graduated college I realized that wasn't my dream anymore. I do not have a fancy job where I make tons of money. I have many different jobs that don't make me a lot of money but that's okay because I am happy. At the end of the day you need to be happy. Be confident in what you do. As I've gotten older I looked around and realized no one is truly happy and secure in life. Some one may have a great job but they have no friends. Some one may have the best relationship but they are stressed about their career. We are all human and we all have flaws. Instead of looking at what you don't have, focus on what you do have. If you are starting school with general studies that is okay! Give yourself time to figure out what you want. If you are going to school and know exactly what you want to do then that is amazing! The most important thing about college is growing, you will realize that people in college don't care about what you're wearing, who you're friends with or where you work. Everyone is so focused on bettering themselves they have let go of the "high school drama". These next 4 years of your life are going to be life changing and amazing. So take tons of pictures, go to the events, be friends with everyone and truly love life.

XO,
Emelyne
